The newly formed Raven Education and Arts Program is looking for children to perform in its upcoming “A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tale,” a musical that will debut at the Raven Theater this December.
Program director Shelly Proschold is inviting talented youngsters from all over the North County who are available to rehearse three nights a week in November and early December before taking the stage for two shows at Fitch Mountain Elementary School and five at the Raven Performing Arts Center. Auditions for children ages 8 to 17 will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Fitch Mountain Elementary School with callbacks at the same time and location on Oct. 28.
She’s encouraging children from Healdsburg, Windsor and Geyserville to audition for parts and asks that each performer bring along a recent photo and a song to sing (with sheet music or a CD).
Shelly, along with her husband Matthew, are hoping to build a children’s theater company in Healdsburg that would include four shows a year and summer drama camps. The two already teach classes at St. John’s Catholic School, Healdsburg Elementary School and Fitch Mountain Elementary School.
“My hope is to build up to have an entire season of shows for kids,” said Proschold. “Next year we’d like to have four shows. It really will depend on funding and the calendar at the Raven.”
The husband-and-wife team have years of experience in children’s theater. In Arizona they taught at one of the nation’s leading children’s companies, Tea Time Theater, and later opened their own company. The two later moved to Healdsburg and began working with students in after-school programs at private and public schools.
The Proscholds taught theater summer camps at the Raven last summer and soon agreed to a partnership for an ongoing children’s program. “We said, come on board with us,” said Raven Executive Director Tom Brand. “You run the program and we’ll deal with all the nasty things like dealing with funding and the administration aspects of the business. We invited her into our fold to make the REAP program.”
The decision was a no-brainer for the Raven, which hosted 125 events and performances last year and welcomes children’s theater to the fold. “I can’t speak highly enough of them,” said Brand. “We’re very fortunate to have two people of such caliber living in our community.”
The Proscholds plans met with the Raven’s mission to provide a stage for artists and entertainment for the community. “We try to service both sides of the curtain and part of that is developing, at a young age, an appreciation of the arts,” he said.
“A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tale” is just the beginning of the program and Proschold said there’s much work ahead. The musical is paid for through a grant and future funding will need to be secured for a continued, year-long program.
“I would like for this to eventually to become the residential theater program for children,” she said. “We want to keep the arts alive.”
